CPEC is Dominating over the Development of Azad Kashmir

China has made great economic developments in last 35 years. In 2013 Xi Jinping the Chinese President restarted the old Silk Route Project, which consists of two phases the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st century Maritime Silk Road. Later on it was called, “Belt and Road Initiate (BRI)”. US, China and other anti-China countries have many issues with this project as they think it will make China gain great global power over political, economic and strategic grounds and will gain its own interests using other nations. Experts say that BRI should be based on international rules, good administration, transparency, equality and must honor the sovereignty and integrity of the region. BRI has stressed on the improved connectivity among 160 countries between China and Eurasia. The core result is that BRI is a road of peace, prosperity, growth and technical innovation for nations.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a very prominent project of China and Pakistan. China has made an investment of almost $62 billion for multiple roads, rail and energy projects. Pakistan is located in a very vital place where it is at the apex of Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf having boarders with Afghanistan, China, Iran and India.

A road project of CPEC passes through Azad Kashmir, its poor economic performance is not due to lack of potential but due to the under utilization of its natural and human resources. Azad Kashmir contributes less than 2% in the GDP and has a population of 1.95 percent. Azad Kashmir has more than 1.5 million tourists every year, if proper infrastructure developments are made it will be a good source of revenue for Pakistan. CPEC will provide such infrastructural developments which will create job opportunities and have a very positive impact on the socioeconomic development. A 200km long motorway is planned under CPEC which connects Azad Kashmir with Mansehra. This highway will definitely make Azad Kashmir reachable and enhance the connectivity hence attracting investors to make investments.

A hydropower energy project has been started in Kotli which has a capacity of 796MW which is going to be completed in 2021. It will definitely overcome the energy crisis going on in Pakistan. Azad Kashmir has a hydropower potential of 8000MW in the medium term and 18000MW in the long run. CPEC authorities have been established and are operational for the development works. We have a very good example in front of us how China has always set targets and achieved in the given span. Mutually working on the projects will surely give a boost to all the development projects.
